The pioneering role that Dr Kamini Rao has played in the field of Assisted Reproduction has resulted from the extensive study, enormous research and credible achievement through dedicated service, adding value to her patients’ lives. On the personal front

Dr Kamini Rao is the daughter of eminent Gynaecologist Dr P.R. Desai and homemaker mother Mrs. Parimala Desai. Dr Rao’s father, Dr. P. R. Desai was the Director of Health & Family Welfare Services for the Govt. of Karnataka and the first male Gynaecologist of the State. He was the senior-most founder of the Bangalore Society of Obstetrics & Gynecology and was thrice elected its President. Her entire family is from medical profession with all but one sibling being an engineer.

With her father as a role model, watching his dedication to his patients and career, his relentless hard work, Dr Kamini decided to follow her father's footsteps and become a doctor. She was always very excited and interested to follow him at work.

Once she decided pursue medicine, her passion for obstetrics was born. She says: “The one thing which will make you wake up looking forward to each day is a passion for your work. It is such a joyous time in most people's lives.”

She completed her MBBS and DGO and moved to London for higher studies. Further, she completed her MRCOG, DORCP, MCh and trained under the renowned Kypros Nicolaides in Foetal Medicine. She completed her Fellowship in Foetal Medicine from Foetal Medicine Foundation while simultaneously training in Infertility at Kings College London and entered the field of Assisted Reproduction. Having spent ten years in the UK, she decided to return to India and start her own Infertility Centre in Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre.

In her words “To be able to give joy to couples and help them have a child is the most fulfilling experience that one can have!”

She has since received her FRCOG and also completed her post-graduate Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics.

Contribution to ISAR

Dr Kamini Rao served as President of the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction between 2006 and 2008. Elections to the 4th Executive Committee were held in 2005 and the New Executive Committee headed by President Dr Kamini Rao was installed at the 11th National Congress at Bangalore. As President, Dr Kamini Rao was responsible for reviving ISAR as an organization and making it more dynamic and robust.

Contribution to the OBG Profession

During the year 2000 Dr Kamini Rao served as President of the All-India Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society. During her tenure, she focussed on making a difference to women’s health in India and decided to tackle the issue of illegal and unsafe abortions in India- one of the major determinants of the high level of maternal morbidity and mortality. The year 2001 was designated as the FOGSI Year of "Safe Abortion Saves Lives" and she has relentlessly promoted the concept of Safe Abortion to make it a reality as it is in the developed world.

Dr Kamini strongly believes that one has a moral obligation to return to society what one has earned from it.
